The Forbidden Village tour with guide. (postponed due to Covid19 until at least January 1st 2021)

Sorry, this event has ended

Our guides (both named Peter coincidentally) both grew up in Veenhuizen while it was still a restricted area for outsiders and therefore can lace your walk with plenty of anecdotes from their own experience or from friends and family who all had strong connections with working within the prison system. (Others guests have pointed out to us that the walk is not just a boring summation of times and facts).

Growing up while there…

Our guides (both named Peter coincidentally) both grew up in Veenhuizen while it was still a restricted area for outsiders and therefore can lace your walk with plenty of anecdotes from their own experience or from friends and family who all had strong connections with working within the prison system. (Others guests have pointed out to us that the walk is not just a boring summation of times and facts).

Growing up while there was no police on the grounds brought enormous freedoms for the youth, ironically enough because when the village was founded is had one of its three poorhouses dedicated to orphans who led a tough life worthy of a Dickens story.

You will get a short explaination  of history in specific eras  so you are better able to place everything you are going to see in the bigger picture of the history of poverty in The Netherlands, the development of our current welfare state, decline of our empire and that liberal Dutch view on crime and punishment.

The walk is about 4,5 kilometers (about three miles) long and takes about two and a half hours. We have package deals with local restaurants and hotel and our deal with our top brewery Maallust food and drink and even a beer tasting needs pointing out
