De Hoop in Wachtum is one of the three mills in Drenthe that was given this name. A common name, its roots lie with the high hopes for the future the arrival of a new mill often generated in the village. An interesting fact is that this mill had been in use as a polder mill in the Hoop op Beter ("hope for better") polder in Groningen’s Veendam since 1813.
An active foundation connected to De Hoop in Wachtum organises all kinds of activities surrounding the mill. In winter, the mill is the departure point of a snertwandeling (“pea soup walk”), while in spring, a large geranium market selling countless species of geraniums is organised by the mill.
