You start at Schreiersbos, where grazing sheep help to control giant hogweed in a natural way. You then walk through the beautiful, restored nature reserve De Oude Weer, part of the Hunze Valley. Heading towards Torenveen - Bonnerveen, you pass meadows where cows belonging to a local farmer graze. They, in turn, help to maintain the nature reserve in a natural way.
From the peace and open space of the countryside, you walk into the village. Along Hoofdstraat, you’ll see the characteristic ribbon development and old captains’ houses, reminders of Gasselternijveen’s rich maritime history. Following the old railway track, you continue towards the beautiful Boerenbos, a 230-hectare woodland planted in 1994.
The history of the potato starch industry also comes to life along the route at Royal Avebe. From there, you follow junction 64 back to where you started: Reiling Hoeve.
