This route consists of two loops: the 6-kilometre Emmerdennen route and the 14-kilometre Valtherbos route. Both routes can be cycled and after the other and are suitable for beginner MTBers.

The 6-kilometre loop starts at Wolfsbergen car park. We advise first cycling this loop in its entirety. It’s a short route that makes optimal use of the options offered by the area’s terrain. The route takes you along winding single tracks, and riders are frequently surprised with fun, short technical climbs and descents. It is a route that can get very wet, however. Although this doesn’t make cycling it any easier, it isn’t a problem if you’re not afraid to get wet. The end point of the route has not been indicated, so keep in mind where you took off.

If you want to cycle the 14-kilometre route through Valtherbos, you first have to cycle a small part of this short route. About a kilometre from the start, the short route continues on a broader forest path to the right; however, if you pay close attention, there’s also a sign indicating that you can go straight on. From here, you’re on the connecting section towards the route in Valtherbos. Cross the paved road after a few kilometres. Here you will a field of grass on your immediate left. Immediately after this field, you can continue the route on the right. Although longer, the route through Valtherbos is much less challenging than the Emmerdennen route. The route mainly consists of long, straight, broad cart tracks. The first part mostly runs along the edge of the forest. There are some technical trails on the last part of the route. The end point of this route is also not indicated, so you have to pay attention to make sure you get back onto the connecting route at the right time.

Just outside of Emmen, on a hill, lies the large dolmen D45 in the forest. The dolmen is 18 meters long and still has a lot of wreaths, which is quite special. The stone tomb lies on top of a large hill.

Dolmen D35 is located near dolmen D34 on the northern edge of the Valtherbos. This dolmen is not very special, there are many stones missing and there is little structure to discover. Nevertheless, it is very special to go to the place.

This is one of the two places in Drenthe where you can still find three dolmens together. The dolmens D39 and D40 are quite small and are still partly in the hill that originally lay over them. Dolmen D38 is the largest of the three.
