Location: ZweelooOn November 1, 1883, Vincent van Gogh traveled to Zweeloo in an open carriage with innkeeper Scholte. Vincent went to Zweeloo to meet other artists, particularly the German painter Max Liebermann. Unfortunately, in the wet autumn season, no artists were present in the village. Still, he was impressed by the village: “The entrance into the village was so beautiful.”
As he decided to walk back to his lodging in Nieuw-Amsterdam, he also passed the church of Zweeloo:
“I passed a little old church, just exactly, just exactly the church at Gréville in Millet’s little painting in the Luxembourg; but here, instead of the little peasant with the spade in that painting, a shepherd with a flock of sheep came along the hedge..”

The church is now open for visits from June 20 to September 27, openingtimes: 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. During these hours, tourist information about Zweeloo and its surroundings is also available in the church.
In case of a funeral or wedding, the church will be closed, but Tourist Info will be open at Aelderstraat 21a in Aalden.
