Meestersveen and Bollenveen

These paaltjestjaskers (a type of mill used to drain wet areas) are located in an area of peatland on the outskirts of the village of Zeijn. The foundation Zeijer Wiek is responsible for maintaining these tjaskers. In addition to maintaining both mills, they have also laid out cycling and walking routes around the village. The route—Veentjesroute Zeijen—takes you past both tjaskers in Meestersveen and Bollenveen. We highly recommend it!

Tjaskers used to be used in Drenthe during the summer months to keep peatlands dry so that the peat could be extracted. They were stored inside in winter. The tjasker in Meestersveen was in Amen before 1940. It was “rediscovered” in an old farmer’s barn in Rolde in the eighties. It was placed at its current location after its renovation in 1983. The tjasker in Bollenveen was built from scratch by a group of Frisian volunteers, after which it was placed in a newly dug pit in the peatland, close to the location where a tjasker had previously stood. Neither of the mills presently have a function, but they add a lot of character to the landscape.
