When Lodge owner Scholte went to the market in Assen, Vincent rode with him as far as Zweeloo. Vincent wrote the following to Theo about this trip:
'Just wanted to tell you briefly about a trip to Zweeloo, a village where Lieberman spent a lot of time and made studies for The Bleaching Ground. Termeulen and Jules Bakhuyzen also spent time here. Just imagine a trip through the moor at 3 o'clock in the morning, in an open cart (I rode along with my landlord, who had to go to the market in Assen). Over a road or "diek" as they say here, which was raised with mud rather than sand. It was a much more agreeable journey than in the barge.'
