Tollhouse in the Straw

The former tollhouse was in use between 1856 and 1914 for collecting tolls on the cobblestone road between Assen and Beilen. Because the tollhouse stood very close to the road, it was wrapped in straw bales. During the TT, riders approached the elegant hairpin bend at great speed. After the start at the Haar, the Oude Tol served as an important timing point roughly one-third into the circuit. The media reported here on the race standings. For spectators, the Oude Tol was a popular spot; hundreds would gather to enjoy the roaring motorcycle spectacle as it thundered past.
