This grain mill and huller (a type of mill used to remove the hulls off rice grains) is a museum. This tall mill runs regularly, and is therefore open several days a week. Jan Pol is Drenthe’s highest mill, and used to be an iconic element of the village of Dalen. A lot of buildings were constructed around the mill; as a result, its presence is less obvious these days. Like many mills, it never had name. When the municipality took the mill over, they gave it the name of its former owner and miller: Jan Pol.

During the Second World War, several Jews were kept in hiding in the mill. They were hidden under the floorboards. The people at the time probably also had a transmitter. At one point, when the occupying forces went looking for the location being used to transmit messages, a small house opposite the mill was raided.
