Lisbon
This footpath goes by the name Lisbon. The origin of the name is unknown, but it probably reflects a local joke: “It feels like walking to the end of the world.” Names like this were not unusual in the Netherlands, and many remote paths and tracks were given playfully exotic names.
Engeland
Engeland is a small hamlet north-east of Ruinen, in the municipality of De Wolden. Despite the name, it has no connection with the United Kingdom. The name comes from the old word ‘eng’ or ‘enk’, meaning a piece of arable land. On Napoleonic maps, the area was originally called Engellant.

Keuterboer
This agricultural area was home mainly to farmers. Many lived as keuterboeren, smallholders running modest farms. For centuries the area formed part of the Lordship of Ruinen. At first, farmers mainly grew grain and buckwheat. Pig farming was introduced later, and a cooperative dairy factory was established in 1896.
