On clear days, you can see the church tower of Sleen from this path. That tower was one of the highest towers in Drenthe before it was struck by lightning and completely destroyed in 1867. In its heyday, it probably served as a beacon of light for a great many meandering travellers.

As an alternative to an actual spire, which was too expensive, an octagonal wooden dome was placed on the tower. Another part of the tower collapsed in 1880 and was repaired about 6 years later. It wasn't until 1923 that a real spire was added to the tower. So in the days when Vincent van Gogh was here, it was still a stubby tower.
