The Final Bends towards De Haar
The residents of Laaghalerveen eagerly anticipated the annual TT event, which brought much conviviality and bustle to their village. Farmers offered accommodation to visitors and riders, who usually slept in the hay or in barns scattered with straw. The farmers themselves often got little sleep, as the hay-filled barns were prone to catching fire quickly due to guests smoking. Sleeping in the hay also brought its discomforts, with heat from decomposing hay often leaving people drenched. There were even occasions when a haystack was ‘turned over’ because someone had lost their dentures after one too many drinks.
In Laaghalerveen, riders worked on their motorcycles themselves. A few had mechanics with them, but this was a great luxury. Repairs and tinkering took place either in the barn or in the living room by gaslight.
