The notorious Koesteeg
When the first TT race was held on public roads in 1925, the course included not only Schoonloo, Grolloo, and Rolde, but also Borger. In the village, riders had to adjust their speed and prepare for changing surfaces, making the route through the village especially thrilling. The Koesteeg was a narrow, unpaved road composed of loose sand and gravel patches, featuring treacherous bends, deep potholes, large bumps, and areas where the gravel was poorly laid. The risk of accidents on the Koesteeg was significant, particularly at high speeds.
However, the municipality of Borger refused to improve and pave the road due to a lack of financial resources. This led the board of the Motoclub ‘Assen en Omstreken’ to decide to find a new route for the street circuit. Before long, a better location was found just south of Assen.
