Since the 1920s, the forests around Appelscha have attracted holidaymakers and youth groups. This landscape, now part of Drents Friese Wold National Park, is home to the Elf Ieken Farm, named after eleven oak trees in the ancient patchwork countryside. What began as a dairy farm has evolved into a leisure-focused farmyard that combines playing, learning and discovery. Camping facilities, a maize maze, play areas, regional produce and daytime activity programmes have given the former barns a new purpose.
