When he arrived at his lodgings, Vincent wrote a letter to his brother:
’Sitting in the large Brabant, conjuring up memories of Brabant, a woman sat peeling potatoes, striking a nice figure. I have talked to a few people here and will take a barge straight down the Hoogeveen canal through the peat bogs, right through the south-eastern corner of Drenthe.'

After three weeks in Hoogeveen, Vincent was ready to continue his travels to the southeast corner of the province. On 2 October 1883, he caught a barge to Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord on the Kruis van Hoogeveen.
