Sweet Struggle on the Racetrack
In the historic race, Piet van Wijngaarden, bearing number 36, mounts his steel steed to wage battle against the clock—that is, a race against the horsepower of time. To emphasise his dominance on the track, he takes the form of a large horseshoe. Yet Piet is not alone. Watched by the crowd, he is closely pursued by the shadow of Jumping Jack, who triumphed in Assen in 1980. Piet strives to escape his pursuers, galloping with his horse armed to the gears past stacked hay bales around the circuit. He wins Assen’s very first race in 1925 and repeats the feat in 1926!

The race has begun, several horses racing one after another. Jumping Jack, number 8, leads the pack. The horses run neck and neck, their horsepower expending enormous energy. Each horse has sugar cubes under its tail, which the following horse snaps up. But not all is fair in this sport. The carousel horse carries not only sugar but also pepper under its tail. This startles the horse behind it, causing it to falter. Under the watchful eyes of the audience, the prancing horse must leave the race prematurely.
