Did you know that there are hundreds of thousands of Dutch people with an ancestor who once stayed in Veenhuizen as an orphan, beggar, tramp or settler? Often this history remains hidden within families, because at the time it was considered a disgrace when someone was sent to Veenhuizen.

With the increasing availability of online archives, it is becoming easier and easier to track down your ancestors. When we recently launched an appeal for descendants, we were pleasantly surprised at the number of people researching their family tree. Almost 60 people responded by sending photos and/or stories of their ancestors to our museum. It is admirable what they have discovered about their ancestors from Veenhuizen and what impressive stories they share with us.

Curious about these special family stories? Then be sure to visit the exhibition from 21 July and be inspired by the history of Veenhuizen and the resilience of our ancestors.
