32 km
From the center of Emmen, you cycle south out of the city. You cycle through beautiful Noordbarge, the water-rich Parc Sandur neighborhood, and then via the IJstijdpad (Ice Age Path) through the Oosterbos back to Emmen.
This 32 km route takes you along the Ice Age Trail. This trail is dedicated to the Ice Age period around 150,000 years ago. During this time, an ice mass from Scandinavia formed the Hondsrug and left behind a large number of boulders in Drenthe. Along the path, you will find information panels, unusual boulders, picnic areas, a climbing course, and a viewing hill.
The mill Zeldenrust has a unique history. From the autumn of 1942 until April 1945, this mill was the hiding place of a Jewish family from Nieuw-Amsterdam. The owner of the mill, Jacoba Omvlee, took a huge risk hiding them. After her death, she was posth

This trail is dedicated to the Ice Age, a period around 150,000 years ago when the ice mass from Scandinavia formed the Hondsrug and left behind a large number of erratic boulders in this area.
The former landfill site is a popular spot to relax after climbing the stairs. It offers a beautiful view of the Hondsrug and, on a clear day, you can see as far as the German border. Next1
Just outside of Emmen, on a hill, lies the large dolmen D45 in the forest. The dolmen is 18 meters long and still has a lot of wreaths, which is quite special. The stone tomb lies on top of a large hill.
From Raadhuisplein, cycle southwards out of the town center.
Via Noordbarge, you will arrive at the Oranjekanaal. This low-lying canal was used for transport by means of towboats. These were pulled by the skipper or his family or a draft horse. They walked on the towpath. This is now overgrown but still visible.
After 3 km, you will arrive at the Zuidbarge bridge. There you can see the Zeldenrust windmill by crossing the street and the bridge.
Back on the route, you will pass a recreational area with a large lake, the Grote Rietplas. Swimming, walking, and other activities are great here. Events such as the annual Hello Festival are also organized here.
Via the residential area of Sandur, you will pass the Parc Sandur holiday park. The road continues through the farmlands and you cycle through Oranjedorp.
You will now arrive at the IJstijdpad (Ice Age Path). This path is dedicated to the Ice Age, a period about 150,000 years ago, when the ice mass from Scandinavia formed the Hondsrug and left a large number of boulders in this area. The IJstijdpad is located next to the Koning Willem Alexander canal, which is part of the Veenvaart.
What is very special is that a height difference of 5 meters in the canal is solved by a so-called double lock. A double lock measuring 2 x 2.5 meters. Get off your bike for a moment and take a look at this impressive lock.
The route continues through the Oosterbos towards Barger Oosterveld. Once a village in the shadow of Emmen, it has now grown up against Emmen.
You could stop at the Muur van Emmen (Wall of Emmen) to climb it. The former landfill site is a popular place to relax after conquering the stairs. You have a beautiful view over the Hondsrug and, in clear weather, you can see as far as the German border. Next to the Wall is the Emmerschans.
Continue along the road and cross the (busy) ring road. A little further on, you cycle back into the forest, the Emmerdennen. Here lies the second largest dolmen in the Netherlands.
You are now almost back at the starting point of this cycle route. In the center, there are plenty of places to stop for a drink or a bite to eat.
We hope you enjoyed the varied landscape and interesting sights along the way.
